Mauna Kea in Hawaii is the tallest mountain in the world, at 13,803 feet (4,207 m) above sea level, just beating Mount Everest. There is a difference how the highest and tallest mountains are measured. The highest is measured from sea level, the tallest from base below sea level.

There are two answers for this. Mount Everest is concidered to be the tallest mountain above sea level at 29,028 feet high. But if you measure a mountain from its base to its summit, then Mauna Kea in Hawaii is the tallest at 33,474 feet. Its summit from sea level is only 13,796 feet.
