Depending on the year, auctions have sold them for $8-$10. The notes were not backed by gold or silver, but are still legal tender. Most are worn out or saved.

American money has undergone many changes, and the red printing is just one phase of it. In this case, the $5 bill was issued with a red seal and serial numbers as a United States Note but had green printing instead of red for the Federal Reserve Note issue. Value depends on the year I believe.

If the seal is red as well you have a $5 silver certificate which is worth anywhere from $6-2,000 to a collector depending on rarity, the year, the condition, if it's been certified, and how well you pitch the sale. You should look up the year of the note, be sure to check and see if it's a star note.

I have heard many things about this- that it is rare and valuable if you have the silver bill with it. While many people say that this is a very common bill. The best way to find out is that you go and visit a money dealer or collector yourself.

The red serial number itself does not make the bill especially valuable. The serial number was switched to red for all production in 1963 and remained so for years.
