Tanning beds can cause burns on any part of the body. Though these burns are not tecnically "sunburns", they are just as harmful to the skin. In a tanning bed burns may occur on sensitive areas like the eyelids. Using tanning oil or lotion can help prevent these types of burns.

Goggles are given to those that utilize the tanning bed to protect their eyes. Even with eyes closed, UV rays can penetrate the eyelids to an extent. Sunburn on the eyelids is common for those that don't protect themselves, and the eyes themselves can be damaged after repeat exposure without protection.
