What is the purpose of the medical lab test called "sed rate?"

My keeps referring to it but I don't know what it means.

Sedimentation rate detects auto immune disorders like vasculitis, hidden infections, inflammation, Rate the RBC counts that is sedimented in the test tube. To continue further treatment initiative. If the test confirmed certain disease condition further Skin and biopsy may be done. Also if not confirmed no tests done further.

Sed rate refers to a blood test meant to identify if there is inflammatory activity in the body. Such a test is generally meant to monitor an inflammatory disease.
