Well, there is no cure. This means the lungs can not fully absorb oxygen to disperse to the rest of the body leading to anoxia to the brain.

It is a serious and chronic disease that can not be reversed. The prognosis is poor, especially if the patient has any or all of the complications associated with emphysema. The prognosis varies but is normally four years or less. It all depends on at what stage it was diagnosed and what treatment the patient is receiving.

There are a lot of factors that will determine the outcome. It depends on the stage that he is in, and if there are any premorbid conditions, such as high blood pressure, if he was a smoker or if he is obese.

Emphysema is a chronic disease that will continually deteriorate the health of the person afflicted. It will never go away, nor will it improve. However, it is very possible for emphysema patients to live comfortably for a long time with the proper medical treatment, and their quality of life does not have to be drastically compromised.

Emphysema is irreversible. It is also degenerative. However, those who suffer from it can do things to slow the disease. They include: stop smoking, stay away from any type of smoke, and become educated about the disease.
