It is highly recommended that you remove the old ceramic tiles before laying new. This will dramatically improve the chances of winding up with a quality, lasting floor. If you really want to lay them on top, sand the finish off the old tiles and make sure to stagger groutlines.

Installing slate over ceramic tile will require that you first inspect the ceramic tile to make sure it is in tact and sound then spreading a mudbed prior to tile.
