The heart circulates blood throughout the body. Blood is pumped from the right side of the heart to the lungs, where it is oxygenated. Blood is then returned to the heart through the pulmonary veins where it enters the left side of the heart. From there it is pumped through the systemic circulation and returned through systemic veins.

The heart is divided into four chambers, or ventricles. Two of these chambers are supplied with "used" blood to filter and pump back out. Two pump clean blood back into the body by way of the aorta. If any of the veins or arteries leading to or from the heart become blocked, it can lead to a heart attack.
