What is "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck about?

A young man makes a wish, finds a big pearl, and takes it home. It brings him nothing but misfortune and eventually causes harm to his family. It is popular because it has an easy message to relate to: be careful what you wish for.

A young couple in mexico,who are stuck in generations of poverty seek the help of a doctor after their son is stung by a scorpion.They try local medicine but to no avail, they can't afford the white doctor so they much search for a pearl which will sell for the cost of the doctor they seek.
