They screen applicants for qualifications as specified by the Federal Trade Commission and provide referral services by zip code. The NRIA assists homeowners in programs for loans, tax credits and grants for home improvements, as well. The group is headquartered in Virginia.

It strives to inform the consumer of reputable contractors and to ensure peaceful settlements or compromises to complaints that may occur between the consumer and the contractor that delivered the work or are scheduled to do such work.
