Personally, I believe that the most pressing issue is the dissolution of the middle class. Foreclosures, credit card debt, unemployment and health care costs are moving more and more people out of a "comfortable" lifestyle and into a life of barely getting by. Check your history and see what happens to a society when the rich-poor gap increases substantially.
