I believe that the longest a coma patient has been bedridden was twenty-one years; in 2007, a Polish man awoke from a nineteen year coma. The nursing pioneer, Florence Nightingale, was intermittently bedridden and debilitated for over fifty years - from 1857 to the end of her life in 1910. The reasons for her illness are still unclear.
