Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is the longest word to ever appear in an English language dictionary and still appears in many editions. It is a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica dust, causing inflammation in the lungs.

Although its not the longest, my favorite long word in English is: Antidisestablishmentarianism. You can pretty much figure out what it means by going through all the different parts of the word.
