Setsubun is also called the bean throwing festival, or bean throwing ceremony. This is observed the day before each season in Japan. Setsubun actually literally means "Seasonal division". More commonly it thru refers to the Spring division, also known as Risshun, which the Japanese observe February third of each year.

The term setsubun refers to the day before the beginning of each season, but is most commonly used about the spring setsubun, or spring festival. The ceremonies in spring setsubun are supposed to cleanse the home of evil spirits for the coming year. Beans are involved in many rituals.

Setsubun is a holiday that recognizes the change of the season. The celebration is made the day before the change of the season (whenever season that may be). On Setsubun, the Buddhist and Shinto priests throw roasted soy beans (some wrapped in gold or silver foil), small envelopes with money, sweets, candies and other prizes. Setsubun is also the Bean-Throwing-Festival.
