This cannot be done by yourself, you have to bring the dog to a veterinarian. Any way that you may attempt would be inhumane. Most veterinarians use an injection of an anesthetic, such as pentobarbital. The owner is permitted to remain with the pet during the injection, to provide some last moments of comfort.

Mostly people do carry the pets, when they are small, but of couse! , you have to put them down when they are big. this helps the owner to teach him some of the lessons, when they take him for walk. mostly the dogs, they walk along with his master. But sometime, we do teach them the bad habits to sleep up.

The humane way to put your dog down would be to take your dog to the vet and have them put to sleep. Though if you are putting your dog to sleep just because you don't want the dog anymore, that is not humane.

Not medical Advice: Dog Euthanasia is the most humane way to put your dog to sleep. Considering that some vets do make house calls now a days you can have informal environment to say good bye to your friend. Most common is the injection as a procedure for euthanasia for dogs.
