Westminster Abbey has existed at its present site since at least the 960s, its once Romanesque structure gradually replaced and expanded in the Gothic style. Its proximity to royal residences and government seats over 1,000 years of British history have made it the primary site for royal coronations and burials.

The original Abby was built in 1080. It was rebuilt after suffering damage in a conflict in the 1640's. Towers were added in 1722 and 1745. The Abby is where all of England's Queens and Kings are coronated.
