Oneness splintered from traditional Pentecostalism in 1914 over interpretation of the trinity and means of salvation. Pentecostals believe in the trinity (one God comprised of three distinct beings) and that salvation results from accepting Christ as savior. Oneness says there is one God who can take many forms and believes salvation comes from repentance, baptism and receiving the Holy Spirit.

When the Assemblies of God was forming around 1914 one of the leaders of that movement had a dream about being baptized in Jesus name only. Several leaders of the Assemblies Of God and were re-baptized in Jesus name and the Oneness Pentecostal Church got it's start.
