Portugal was a part of the Roman Empire from the first century BC until Rome's fall in the fifth century AD. After a period of Germanic occupation, it was conquered by Muslims in the 8th century. It emerged from Muslim rule in the twelfth century to become an independent kingdom.

At the western extreme of the Iberian penninsula Portugal has been part of the Roman, Visigothic, Moorish, and Spanish Empires. Now an independent country it has evolved through being a kingdom, and fascist dictatorship to a flourishing democracy in today world.
