Cold temperatures are used to reduce swelling. This is because the tiny blood vessels called capillaries are reduced in diameter in response to cold. So, no fresh blood enters the site, and blood is the source of the fluid that causes swelling. The swelling then goes down gradually. Heat may have the effect of increasing swelling, and won't reduce it.

If you have an area on your body that is swelling you should always apply ice to the area to reduce the swelling that is occuring. Do not apply heat to the area.

Using ice is the best way to make swelling go down, however there are instances for strained muscles that you would want to use heat. Putting ice on a bump will make it quickly subside though.
