An "extranet" is a companies outward facing internal website. It is generally used for employees who are working remotely to access company information from which ever location they are at. Sometimes the information on the extranet includes info for the public.

The extranet, is simply an extension of what is known as the "intranet". A business or institution allows their employees to access the intranet so that they can only access business related things. The "extranet" is given when the company or business decideds to give their employees limited access to the world wide web as well.

It is usually a network within a company that the people working there use. The information and files within this network are not visible to the internet users outside the company.

It's a private network, residing on a company's private server. The extranet gives the public access to site information, while giving the company control over what is seen or accessed.

The extra net is another name for the Internet. You probably heard it at work. Most works have an internal network accessible by workers only called the Intranet, once you leave that and surf outside the companies site you are on the extra net.
