Proselytize was first recorded in England in 1679. It is derived from the English word proselyte and from the Church Latin word proselytus (foreign, strange, come from abroad; converted heathen)

The word proselytize comes from the Greek lamguage and the etymology or the "true sense" of it means converting someone into one's very own path or way of life.
