It really depends on how it's worded. These terms are often interchanged. Technically, SHARES refers to ownership in 1 company. STOCKS are if you own shares in multiple companies. Example: My overall portfolio has many stocks, including shares of IBM and APPLE. Individually they are shares, but together they are stocks.

The Stock of the Business is the collective capital paid or invested into a company. A Share is just a small part of the Stock of a company. Each Share in a company has an individual face value and the total face value of a Share makes up the value of the Stock.

Stocks are a portion of the company that is offered for sale. So basically you own a share of the company.

Stocks and shares are essentially two words that can be used to identify the same thing. Stocks refer to a portion of a publicly traded company that you can purchase at a stock exchange. Shares refer to the number of pieces of the company you can purchase. Please note that not all companies have the same number of shares available.
