HTTP, or Hypertext Transfer Protocol is basically a protocol used to view websites over the internet. HTTP traffic to and from your computer is in "clear text" that is something that could easily be read if intercepted. HTTPS provides the same ability as HTTP, however the communication is encrypted. There is an encryption handshake that occurs before traffic can flow.

http is responsible for transmitting and receiving information across the internet while https is encrypted using SSL that means that your session cannot be observed by a third party because it is safe and has more security than http that is just cleartext.
