Bake is used when you want heat under the food to cook slower. Broil is used when you want heat directly over food such as a steak.

when you bake something your oven radiates heat from the bottom and a fan turns on to cook it evenly, when you use the broiler it just gets the top of the inside of your oven hot so it sears the top of what ever your cooking

Baking heats the whole oven to a temperature of up to 500 degrees. broiling sears the food from the top an attains a temperature of over 500 degrees.

When you bake, the food is baked from all around in the oven. Broiling allows you to cook from the top of the oven making crispier food.
