A sprain is an injury to a ligament, a thick, tough, fibrous tissue that connects bones together. The ligaments that are most commonly injured are in the ankle, knee, and wrist. A strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon. Muscles move your skeleton and if they are stretched too far, it causes a strain.
