One difference is people vote for a president (not their party) but do not vote for a prime minister - they vote for the party whom he or she leads.

A President is directly elected by the people. A Prime Minister is selected by the majority party in Parliament or coalition of parties in the legislature. Presidents are elected to specific terms. Prime Ministers can change at any time as the legislature chooses.

It varies by country. In countries with both, the president is typically the head of state, while the prime minister is head of government.
