A prefix is an element placed at the beginning of a word to change its meaning. A suffix is an element placed at the end of a word to change its meaning. A word can have both, for example, aquarium is made up of the prefix aqua- meaning water and -arium meaning thing or place connected to.

A prefix is a modifier for a word that is attached to the beginning of the word, while a suffix attached to the end. A word can have both at once. To place means to put, but to displace means to move. Displacement is that act.
