A preface is written by the author and gives ther reader insight into the purpose of the book, and how it came to be. It also may include acknowledgements and gratitude to others. An introduction describes subject matter of the book, and introduces the text and indicates point of view

A preface contains general information that author wants to convey. The preface may contain acknowledgements, the process of how the book was written, biographical information or other topics loosely related to the book. An introduction is more specific and explains the topic or content of the book.

The preface of a book usually answers the question, "Why did I write this book? " The introduction generally tells the reader what the book is about. These terms have come to be interchangeable in modern times.
