This started in the early 1900's in the North where many people gave presents to teachers especially around the holidays and since many were farmers who had apple trees they would give their best looking apple to their teacher.

The concept of bringing an apple to your teacher probably began in New England. In the early days of organized schooling, teachers were compensated with mostly foodstuffs, candles and other necessities. Apples were plentiful in the area so they were used for payment.

One of the most popular ideas about children bringing apples for their teacher is that it was a tasty and a healthy food to give poorly paid teachers. Many students who bring apples to teachers are accused of being apple polishers trying to get better grades.

In the old days apples were plentiful and easily picked up when they fell onto the ground. Students woudl pick them up and take them to the teacher because it was a free gift. Everyone wanted to be the teacher's favorite student. They were essentially bribing the teacher. But many students just wanted to do something nice.
