Using a sharp knife, cut off a strip of bark all the way around the tree, exposing the white wood beneath. This will stop sap flow and kill the tree. An additional option is to nail a large number of copper nails into the tree trunk, making sure not to then use a chainsaw on the tree.

Killing a tree is rarely a good idea. A dead tree is a fire and safety hazard. If you need the tree gone, remove it properly by cutting it down.
