Buy the best trees you can afford. Dig a hole twice as wide as the tree's root ball, but no deeper. Remove all wires and containers from the tree. Make sure the tree is straight. Backfill the hole. Water the tree, and mulch it. Make sure the tree is planted at the same level it grew in the nursery.

Dig a hole about one foot deep to place the root portion of the tree in. Fill the hole with water, then place the roots in the hole. Cover the empty portions with dirt, and put the remaining dirt from digging the hole around the base of the tree.

Allow plenty of room for growth, at least four to five feet between trees. Plants will need plenty of water in soil that drains well.

I think the ideal spacing is 10 to 12 feet. The best way is not to plant in one straight line, but two. Staggering the trees in two lines in a zigzag pattern. This makes an even thicker border that also serves as a wind break in the winter months.
