There are numerous project management programs available that will create Gantt charts for you that will show project status in relation to the project's schedule. It will also break down the schedule to include every phase of the project including every phases' completion in approximate percentages.

This is a great motivational tool. As far as the software, we built our own. Buy one, or be more specific about the type of project.

Make sure that management and IT together develop benchmarks for each phase of the project. If the benchmark completion status requires more input from management, document it. If an IT benchmark needs more time for testing, document it. This ensures more timely delivery and resolves most conflicts. Everyone participates without getting defensive. Review daily or weekly to stay on track.
