There are many great bottom feeders for tropical tanks and they depend on the type of fish they're paired with and the size of the tank. As long as a catfish is large enough that it won't get attacked, almost any are fine. Corydoras varieties are very popular with tetras.

A very common cheap fish called Plecostomus, which comes in a few varieties, is friendly to other fish and easy to care for. However, if they live long enough they will get very large. Chinese algae eaters are also a great easy choice.

Ghost shrimp are a great addition to a tropical tank. They are very fun to watch and they stay very active. They are easy to take care of and can last a long time.

In my opinion the Hypostomus plecostomus is the best bottom feeder that is a tropical fish. They have a long life as well as help keep the tank clean.

Although bottom feeder fish eat leftovers, they need their own food, too. Different species range in different sizes so make sure you study up on what suits your aquarium size. Loricariids(plecs, sucker-mouth catfish) are good cleaners and they mix well with others. The Otocinclus catfish is a dwarf and may be suitable for smaller spaces, although you will need several.

Plecostomus (if you have a tank of at least 3 ft, or if smaller, bristle nose catfish. I've always had one or the other in tropical tanks, because they keep the glass clean as well.
