The "average" molectular velocity is based on the rotational spin of a single Hydrogen atom. Its determined to be 316700 rotations per second by the International Society of Weights and Measurements and is the basis of "atomic clocks".

actually its the average speed the molecules are going, hence the word average... and it isnt only for Hydrogen, Temperature is determined by how fast the molecules are moving so its pretty much =.  add a comment

Average molecular velocity is the mean speed at which molecules in a sample are traveling. In a gas, molecules are traveling in random directions and the concept of average molecular velocity can be thought of as the thermal energy contained in the sample. This is related to the concept of temperature.
