Atmoic mass number is used to identify elements and isotopes of elements. It is calculated by adding together the number of protons and neutrons for a given element.
The atomic mass number of an element is the number of nucleons in an atom of that element. To calculate the atomic mass number you add up the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of the atom.
