What is the annual limit for a 401k?

For 2011, the annual contribution limit for an employee is $16,500 of pre-tax dollars. The employer can contribute this much as well. The limit was also 16,500 in 2009 and 2008. The annual contribution limit can be raised based on the rate of inflation in increments of five hundred dollars.

The limit for contribution into 401 plans varies as to whether or not your are married or single. It also depends whether you and your spouses filing status

If you are 49 or young then your maximum limit is $16,500, but if you are 50 or older the max is $22,000.
