There are two well known phase transitions. There is melting/freezing which is the transition between the solid state and the liquid state. There is evaporation/condensation, which is the transition between the liquid and the gas phases. Sublimation is the direct transition between the solid and gas phases without going through the liquid phase. Dry ice (frozen CO2) undergoes sublimations.

Sublimation is the physical reaction of a material passing from a solid phase to a gas phase without going through a liquid. e.g. CO2 vapor coming off dry ice.
