Stringhalt is an abnormal gait in a horse caused by the hock joints. The abnormal gait may be minor or severe depending on the flexion of the step. The cause of this affliction is nerve degeneration though the cause of the degeneration is unknown. It could be from a toxin.

It is an abnormal gait and is said to be a condition found only in horses in Northwest PA. It may cause the horse to have difficulty moving forward and causes them to move forward by going sideways. It is associated with nerve degenration. Treatment may last up to several months.

The basic symptom of Stringhalt is an exaggerated lifting of the back legs - either one at a time, or both together, in a bunny hopping fashion. This can lead to a degeneration of the muscles in the hind-quarters. However, many horses do recover from this disease.
