Make contact with local artists whose art you like. If you like their work, chances are that your friends will also. Advertise online or in the paper and serve appetizers and drinks to party goers. Help educate your guests about the artist and their work.

First, find a venue. Call art galleries/studio spaces and ask if they have any open days where you can host a show. Call other galleries and reps and invite them.

Make a small business plan with all costs and income if any. Get all artists and services (rooms, drinks, invitations, posters etc) to accept and confirm in writing exactly what they will do and for what return. Publicity is critical to success so use all means you can find.

Know your audience and come up with a unifying theme for the show. Try and find some innovative emerging artists who will be willing to help you with promotion.

Be eloquent and professional in demeanor and in dress. Know a lot about art history, and periods of great achievements in art. The smarter and classier you appear the better.

Publicity that matters is what matters. It does not matter if a thousand people uninterested in art see your ad; make sure hundreds of art aficionados have seen your ads. Generate initial traffic to the event that will sustain the traffic through word of mouth. Don't just invite art critics; invite art students, art teachers, local newspapers, and photographers.

Make sure you advertise. Put up flyers at local businesses and at the library. Also, announce it on Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media site. If you build some excitement, more people will show up. Invite the local community paper to cover it.

From one artist to another I can say that planning and publicity are essential. In the same year I was in two group shows. One we were able to plan really well and get invites and press releases and it was a huge success. The other was the opposite.

When hosting a fine art show keep the asking price for booth or space rental low. There are many shows for you to compete with, don't scare away the artists.

Well, it can be a lot of work but it is manageable. Have a list of what you will be offering at the show. Will you be showcasing some art? Will you be having discussions about certain things? You need to make an order or timeline of how the event will go.
