Sake is a Japanese alcoholic beverage, made from rice. It's sometimes referred to as "rice wine", but it really is more of a beer, due to the brewing process it goes through.

O-Sake is the Japanese term for alcoholic beverage. It is most usually a brewed Rice beverage that is called Wine, although it is closer to a beer. Sake generally has about ten to sixteen percent alcohol while beers have lower content. There are two types: ordinary and special designation - which is more expensive. Cheap sake tastes awful served cold!

In America Sake is a rice wine often served at Japanese restaurants. It can be used in other mixed drinks but can also be used in certain sauces. Typically if you are offered sake it is the drink, if it is a selection with food it is a sauce.
