What is roughage?

My doctor told me to eat more like I knew what that was.

"Roughage" is dietary fiber. Great sources of fiber include fruit, potatoes, whole grains, and most any vegetable. Fiber adds bulk and aids in digestion and bowel function.

Foods that have a lot of roughage are mainly vegetables. Cabbage is especially considered because it is one of the "roughest." Rice, especially brown, and cereals like oatmeal are good sources.
