This is an antiquated veterinarian term for the wheezy sound that old dogs have. Dogs inhale a lot of dust in their life times from sniffing the ground and they get wheezy, kind of like a human smoker.

Some vets refer to pulmonary fibrosis as "old dog lungs". Specifically, it refers to scar tissue that has developed on the lungs, resulting in shortness of breath. Dogs with this condition should receive veterinary care, and the owner should keep the dog's weight under control through diet and ensure that the dog avoids strenuous exercise.

"Old dog lungs" is a term that isn't used very commonly. Usually when a dog has this it breathes very heavily when it is standing or sitting up and can only breathe easily when it's laying down.

This is when your dogs starts wheeze when it breathes. This of course can be caused by old age, breathing in dust and debris, or by just being an outside dog. Sometimes it is common and sometimes it needs medical attention. Call your vet if you hear your dog breathing like this.

Breathing problems are common in elderly dogs. They tend to pant heavily and seem to have a hard time "catching their breath" anytime they aren't laying down. Their lungs are essentially wearing out with age, but ultimately, it's usually more uncomfortable than life threatening.

"Old dog lungs" occurs when an elderly dog has been walked in the freezing cold, year after year. After a while, the cold air starts to hurt the dog's lungs.
