Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as occurring or recurring at regular intervals, or repeatedly from time to time, or consisting of or containing a series of repeated stages, processes, or digits.

Periodic means from time to time but at a regulate period of time. Something that happens, or should be done, registered at each x hours, days, months, years etc. For example periodic review for the teachers means an examination at each three years, for cars is periodic revision each year.
