Life in the trenches usually refers to someone who lives their life fighting some sort of battle, either literally or figuratively. The phrase dates back to the First World War, where most soldiers lived in hellish conditions in trenches a dozen yards from opposing forces. Journalists would write stories about them titled "Life in the Trenches" and the phrase stuck.
