It depends on the type of testing you want done. For a temperature test most repairmen will just put the dryer on high and toss in a special padded thermometer. You could make one yourself easily, use a lot of padding.

Get electrical tester. Once you have electrical tester and know how to use it. Switch breaker on for the dry. Place tester receptacle if lights then you have power.
