Section 8 in New York is government sponsored housing vouchers for low to very low income households in the State of New York. It works with the U. S. HUD and provides assistance to nearly 38,000 families throughout the state. Many of the recipients are senior citizens or individuals with disabilities.

It's basically vouchers that help families find affordable housing. If a family chooses a place with rent that exceeds the allowance, they can elect to pay the difference. They currently serve over 800,000 people.

It has to do with the Housing Authority. Low-income people may select a place to live and the government pays the rent for them as long as it meets certain standards.
