A blood test can determine whether a person has the hemochromatosis gene. Treatment involves removal of blood from the body periodically.

If untreated, it can lead to anemia, liver problems, thyroid deficiency, impotenence or early menopause, pacrease damage including diabetis, damage to adrenal glands, heart problems, and unusual skin pigmentation.
