Several things can be done for calcaneal (heel) pain. First, rest to allow the foot to heal. Second, use better footwear which supports the arch of the foot and cushions the heel. Lastly, one can strengthen the foot muscles by repeatedly pointing your toes away from your body (dorsiflexion).

Because of the problem of putting pressure on it, cold and warm compresses, shockwave and ultrasound therapy, even radiotherapy. A gel insert with a hole for the heel is helpful.

Calcaneus is actually a bone. If you're referring to calcaneus or heel pain, try the PRICE protocol. Protect, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

The best way to combat soreness of the calcaneus is to make sure that your shoes have adequate support, especially around the arch, so that there is not too much pressure on the heel area. Stretching the foot down, pointing toes, and up towards the leg may help, but the best care is preventative.

Although I have done no research on this and I am not a doctor I would think the best therapy for the calcaneus would be to swim. This way you can move the bone without putting pressure on it. I would suspect walking on it would only add more strain to it.
