There is a therapy with this name, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, that is used most often to treat people whose diagnosis is Borderline Personality Disorder. Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a cognitive-behavioral therapy focuses first on stabilizing behavior, including preventing suicidal behavior. In later stages, it focuses on social and problem-solving skills.

Dialectal behavior was originally a term used to refer to people with borderline personality disorder. Over the years it has included those who have the urge to harm or hurt themselves. People with thoughts and/or feelings about suicide. The range widened to include individuals with eating disorders and substance abuse issues.

People with Dialectical Behavior have self-harming behaviors such as self-cutting. It is also common for people with DB to have suicidal thoughts or actions.
