In first grade math, one can expect to learn to count by 5s, 10s, 20s, etc. They also learn the basic skills of addition and subtraction with simple numbers. Furthermore, they begin to understand the concepts of story problems and how to create the set-up to find the ultimate mathematical solution.

Addition is learnt, subtraction is learnt, multiplication is learnt, and division involving integers (whole numbers) is also used. However, all these are basic sums, not involving numbers bigger than perhaps 20.
