Constructive play is play that encourages learning and experimentation in children. Making sure they have access to toys that encourage creativity and limiting there time with toys, tv and video games that will encourage passivity is also important. Try playing pretend with your child, asking then questions and trying to get them solve problems.

When children manipulate objects to create or recreate something, they are engaging in what traditional educators call constructive play. Building blocks, tea sets, and modeling clay are good examples of toys that foster constructive play. Non-traditional methods typically use "real" items (washing your dinner plates, for example) for constructive play.
